Abstract
In some cases of facial asymmetry with mandibular prognatism that are caused by the unilateral condylar hyperplasia, Lefort I osteotomy on the maxilla and unilateral condylectomy alone on the affected side can be efficient method to give more
favorable
results.
But, we usually have a difficulty in deciding the exact amount of the condyle to be removed because of the postoperative mandibular shift. The purpose of this study is to investigate the direction of mandibular shift caused by bone remodeling of
resected condyle after the unilateral condylectomy and to take advantage of the results as references for deciding the amount of condylectomy. The subjects for this study were 4 patients who had unilateral condylar hyperplasia with maxillary
canting and
they all were treated with unilateral condylar hyerplasia with maxillary canting and they all were treated with unilateral condylectomy and Lefort I osteotomy. We have taken serial cephalometric P-A radiography preoperatively, immediate
postoperatively
and at the long term follow up, and evaluated the mandibular repositioning during this period.
The results of this study suggest, that the mandibular position following unilateral condylectomy is changed toward non-operated site during the bone healing period.
